About the composers
'I CAN ONLY GIVE YOU EVERYTHING'
was composed one stormy midnight...this is an aggressive, stomping number
written with Van's raw, savage voice in mind. (Linernotes:
'Them Again' LP)
'CALL MY NAME' This number was written by talented
composer/producer Tommy Scott who, at the boys' request, wrote a few of
the numbers on this LP. (Linernotes: 'Them Again' LP)
A number of tracks on this LP were recorded by
Tommy Scott, the brilliant young A&R man from Scotland. (Linernotes:
'The Angry Young Them' LP)
'I Can Only Give You Everything' was written by Phil Coulter and
Tommy Scott and is now published by Carbert Music, Inc. It is registered
as BMI work # 607021. Phil Coulter was born Philip Michael Coulter in Derry, Northern Ireland and his claim to fame came in 1967 when Sandie Shaw's
'Puppet On A String' (which he co-wrote with Bill Martin) won the Eurovision
song contest! A year later they nearly repeated their success when Cliff
Richard's 'Congratulations' finished second in the 1968 Eurovision song
contest. Both singles hit the number 1 spot in the British singles charts.
Bill Martin and Phil Coulter also wrote 'Hi Hi Hazel' for Geno Washington
& The Ram Jam Band and The Troggs (#45 in July 1966 and #42 in July
1967 respectively). Another big hit of his was 'Surround Yourself With
Sorrow' which was a #3 hit for Cilla Black in February 1969. Tommy Scott
was born Thomas Kilpatrick in Scotland and of course we all remember him
best for the production work he did for The Beatstalkers, Them & The
Wheels, who both recorded two other songs that he wrote ('Call My Name'
& 'Don't You Know'). He started off as a member of Glasgow bands The
Apaches and Dean Ford & The Gaylords, who later evolved into Marmalade.
One final curious note: BMI work # 607020 ('I Can Only Give You Everything'
is # 607021) is a Phil Coulter song called 'I Can Only Give You Anything'!
